Halloween Costume Tips for Dogs and Cats

Halloween dress-up should be fun for everyone, including the one wearing the costume. These simple habits help keep it that way.

Start with the right fit

Measure your pet's neck, chest and back length and compare them with the size chart for that costume (here's how to measure). A costume should never squeeze, rub or hang so low that your pet trips on it.

Practice before the big day

Put the costume on for a minute or two at home, with treats and praise, a few days before Halloween. Build up slowly.

Keep it short and supervised

  • Costumes are for dress-up and photos, not all-day wear.
  • Never leave a pet alone while wearing a costume.
  • Remove anything your pet tries to chew, especially small or loose parts.
  • Make sure the costume doesn't cover your pet's eyes, ears, nose or mouth.

Watch for signs it's not working

If your pet freezes, tries to back out of the costume, scratches at it or simply looks unhappy, take it off. Some pets prefer a bandana or a hat, and that's fine.

Think about the whole evening

Trick-or-treat night can be loud and busy. Keep candy out of reach, keep your pet's ID tags on, and give them a quiet place to retreat to. If you have questions about your own pet's health or comfort, ask your vet.
