How to Measure Your Dog for a Halloween Costume
Share
The most common costume problem isn't the costume. It's the size. A cape that's too short looks like a bib, and a rider costume that's too tight won't close. The good news: measuring your dog takes about two minutes.
What you need
- A soft measuring tape (or a piece of string and a ruler)
- A treat or two, for cooperation
- Your dog, standing up
The three measurements
- Neck: measure around the base of the neck, where a collar sits.
- Chest: measure around the widest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs. This is usually the most important number.
- Back length: measure from the base of the neck to the base of the tail.
Some costumes also list your pet's weight. If you have a recent weight from a check-up, keep it handy.
Tips for getting it right
- Keep the tape snug but not tight. You should be able to slide two fingers under it.
- Measure while your dog is standing, not sitting or lying down.
- Write the numbers down in both inches and centimetres. Many costume size charts use centimetres.
- Between two sizes? Go one size up. A little room is more comfortable than too little.
- Check the size chart on each product. Sizes are not the same from one costume to the next, so an M in one costume may not be an M in another.
Measuring a cat
The same three measurements work for cats. Most cats prefer it quick, so have the tape ready before you start.
